B-17 Technical Description

The B-17 was an aeronautical marvel when first rolled out.  Here we describe the main features that set the legend apart from its peers.

The B-17's Beating Heart - The Wright R-1820 Cyclone

The Wright R-1820 was a solid and dependable unit.  Though it ran a bit 'dirty' compared to the powerplant of it's main rival the B-24 - the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp - it gave good service and reliably powered the legend into battle.

B-17 Bomb Loads

The B-17 had a relatively small bomb load, but was supposed to fight its way to targets by virtue of its many guns.  Once over the target, the massed formations could still deliver a knockout blow.
