Design and Production

The design of the B-17 was state of the art for the 1930s.  furthermore, Boeing took a big gamble by using four instead of two engines as many competitors did.

After the gamble paid off, the production of the B-17 was even more interesting than the dramatic risk of the design - consisting of constant modification and massive numbers of machines built - something that was a challenge in itself

In July 1935, the assembly of the Model 299 reached its culmination, and the aircraft was unveiled for the press and dignitaries. Boeing had poured over 153,000 man-hours and invested over $400,000 of its reserves into this ambitious endeavor. The stakes were high.

Positive publicity was crucial for the Model 299, as the Army's decision at Wright Field hinged on more than the judgment of aviation engineers. Richard L. Williams, a journalist from the Seattle Times, delivered a comment that would become instrumental in shaping the 299's image - and name.
