B-17 Variants
The B-17 was constantly improved throughout its service life. When a critical mass of changes occurred, a new variant would be created via a new designation - distinguishing the more capable model from its forebears.
01
A private venture by Boeing, the Prototype B-17 was known as the 'Model 299' or 'Boeing Model 299', shortened to 'B-299'. Later it was also referred to as the XB-17 by the USAAF. We'll just call it the Legend.
02
A contract awarded to Boeing on 17 January 1936 called for 13 Y1B-17s, plus one more for static testing. The 'Y' indicated that the aircraft were for service testing rather than experimental...
03
While the initial Y1B-17 production models provided invaluable service testing, one dedicated airframe took on an even more pioneering role. Designated the Y1B-17A, this aircraft was modified to serve as the flying testbed for a critical technology - engine turbocharging.
04
The B-17B was the production variant that finally realized the full potential of Boeing's heavy bomber design. Incorporating a redesigned nose, larger vertical tail, and other aerodynamic refinements, as well as turbosuperchargers installed at the factory.
05
The B-17C was Boeing's attempt to upgrade the firepower of the Flying Fortress. Various improvements were made, such as flush windows rather than 'blisters' and the notable 'bathtub' position under the central fuselage.
06
The B-17D was an incremental improvement over the C model - primarily seeking to address shortcomings in armament. The main visual distinction between the C and D was the introduction of cowl flaps on the latter.
07
The B-17E was the first of the "Big Tailed" Fortresses. All variants after this model had the definitive airframe shape that many automatically associate with this legendary machine.
08
The B-17F was a further refinement of the B-17E. For many is the definitive Fort - graceful and refined. Yet it was also the first to be produced in massive numbers and bare the brunt of the air offensive over the Reich
09
The B-17G is the ultimate Flying fortress. The inclusion of the chin turret finally remedied the deficit in frontal protection. It also gave the machine a more warlike appearance appropriate to its name - a Flying Fortress festooned with turrets.
